I was about to put a whole essay in the tags but then it was getting far too long so I'm gonna put it here instead. when pondering genderswaps, I like to use it as an opportunity to examine a character's relationship to gender and gender roles and how they perform gender, and also a chance to see what might be part of their personality divorced from gender performance. so now im going to use this as an excuse to discuss how I think the mxtx couples would be performing gender in a genderswap scenario (presuming a cisswap, since if I get started talking about my trans headcanons I'll be here all day)

with bingqiu, the main narrative of svsss deals significantly with gender roles, which I have talked about At Length. I won't get into all that here but essentially it boils down to both of them adopting more feminine roles (bingmei's maidenlike behavior, shen qingqiu's whole milf thing). so in a genderswap, that would be reversed -- while canon bingmei is more feminine, genderswap bingdi should get to be more masculine, especially in a like. performing gentlemanly things, like opening the doors for sqq and giving sqq her coat or whatever lol as for shen qingqiu, the power of middle aged milf shizun is blinding me and it's very difficult to look away from. however, if presuming the same logic here, where canon sqq starts acting like binghe's mother, genderswap sqq would presumably decide binghe needs a father figure and it's up to her to provide, which is. also very compelling to think about. generally shen qingqiu's relationship to gender is so fucking confusing and complicated because sqq's brain is a full of tangled knots, so idk if she would fit neatly into femme or butch, but whatever she's doing, it's doing Some Shit to binghe's brain for sure

as for wangxian, canon lan wangji definitely seems to enjoy fulfilling the husband role for wei wuxian, but tbh it doesn't really seem like a gender thing to me? granted, I am not a lwj scholar so someone else might have a more complex take than me, but lan wangji just seems to enjoy providing for wwx, and gender doesn't really come into that as the motivation. so I think a genderswapped lan wangji would still enjoy playing the husband role and providing for wwx, and I could definitely see that turning into a butch thing for her. which I'm still fanning myself thinking about btw. wei wuxian on the other hand definitely seems more aware of how gender roles play into their relationship, but in a way where he seems to really enjoy playing with them and embracing both roles depending on the context, so I think genderswapped wwx would still be kinda genderfucked. wwx's gender to me is "whatever wei wuxian would get the most entertainment out of in that moment"

finally, hualian are sexually dimorphic birds to me. regardless of gender. honestly, swapping their genders I think would have the least effect out of all three couples, which is amusing considering they're the ones who could actually genderswap themselves any time they want in canon. I think genderswapped xie lian is butch simply out of practicality. performing femininity takes a lot of effort and xie lian simply Does Not Care. in my heart, a modern genderswapped xie lian probably performed femininity pretty hard in her youth (whatever the modern equivalent of the crown prince years would be) but she's gone through so much shit that she's just like "wow this does not matter to me that much. I'm just gonna focus on what's practical instead of looking pretty" and now she's like. really into cargo shorts because of all the pockets. that sort of thing. meanwhile hua cheng LOVES putting effort into her appearance. she LOVES the drama. this is true of canon hua cheng. his fashion is the equivalent of shaking keys in front of xie lian to get his attention, an effect that's enhanced by the fact that he literally jangles when he walks. so genderswapped hua cheng is doing some crazy high femme camp shit simply because she Loves Drama and Likes To Look Good. the most exaggerated makeup. ten million sparkling accessories. extremely low cut tops to show off her (flat) cleavage. hualian never look like they're going to the same event because hua cheng dresses with the energy of "I need to be so hot it makes everyone in this farmers market want to kill themselves" meanwhile xie lian has been wearing the same overalls all week

sorry if u arent looking for advice/commentary, but imo working towards change IS worth it. Even if its slow, even if its not for something glamorous, the work and openness to change is the important part. Moving out of your parents house is legitimately SO freeing, even if things suck you arent being controlled by someone else. Look at apartments, look at places to find roommates (less than ideal i know this very well) if living alone is out of your price point, contact temp agencies for work if you can. If you can use the microsoft office suite, especially excel, you have a leg up on a lot of people. And if you cant, theres tons of resources online to learn! There’s even free or low cost certification programs that look good on resumes. There’s no wrong way to live, unless its causing u pain. I hope u can find independence and transition soon 🫂

I try to close the app but it’s frozen, and the screen starts to fade to black…. expect for rick’s face.

Regarding your Locked Tomb comments, I completely agree (even as a fan of the series). It's in the same vein as when people are like "Go play xyz game, no I can't tell you anything about it" and then you play it and it's the distinct genre that you don't enjoy. Like, there are plenty of ways to describe the Locked Tomb that isn't just "necromancy and lesbians" but people are so fandom-poisoned that they think that's a good enough description.

yeah! precisely. and it goes for anything, not just TLT, i just picked on TLT because i see it fairly frequently to the point that i still don't have a clear picture of what TLT is about. which is fine, i don't think TLT is for me from what i do know, so i'm not overly concerned to be honest.

i think people just need sometimes to take a step back and say "what are the themes of this piece? the overarching plot beats? how do i recommend this to someone?"

like, there's a tv show called in the flesh that means the woooorld to me, and i could describe it as "gay zombies". instead i might talk about the basic premise (it's a drama set post-zombie-apocalypse where the zombies can be 'cured' so that they're 'normal' again, and the main character kieren is a zombie who is returning home at the start of the series).

i might talk about it's themes (zombies-as-a-metaphor, mental illness, grief and associated trauma, prejudice and ostracisation, being queer in a small town).

i might then eventually get around to 'the main character is bisexual and his boyfriend(s) are central to the plot of both seasons'. eventually. which i can also summarise as 'gay zombies'

but you can see how i would be doing a disservice to in the flesh if i only ever said it was about gay zombies

Were there any shorts that paired Bugs and Porky? Like the the only ones I can think of are from New Looney Tunes/Wabbit and I just know there had be shorts that starred just them before that.

OH MAN!!! OKAY. i'm going to preface this right now with: the answer is simple (tl;dr: barely, i'd say only one truly counts during the classic era) but the Porky and Bugs dynamic has become a side obsession for me within the past year or so, and i don't really have many opportunities to talk about it on this blog. so i will probably end up giving you way too much info than what you asked for. so there's the tldr above! and to reiterate it further...

SO. YES. to answer your question, they were occasionally paired together in the classics, but nothing really meaningful. Porky's Hare Hunt, which is a self-admitted rip on Porky's Duck Hunt, births a prototypal Bugs Bunny who could not be further from his fully realized counterpart... but there is a direct lineage.

this is the only short in the classics to have them actually talking to each other, and even then, proto-Bugs sounds nothing like how he would. i both count this one and don't, really... it's more interesting to count it, but, this isn't really Bugs. but as the title implies, it's all about Porky's attempts to hunt this screwy rabbit who keeps heckling him and slipping out of his fingers. it also births the Groucho Marx-ism of "of course you realize, this means war!" associated with the real Bugs, so there is that going for it!

interestingly, this model sheet surfaced a few months ago--Bob Clampett had said something in an interview about him helping out with the story for this one, and i always dismissed that as one of his "exaggerations" since he had a knack for making many mountains out of molehills, including his involvement in the origins of Bugs... but this does look like a Clampett or Clampett unit drawing, and the short was directed by Ben "Bugs" Hardaway, whose style was markedly different... so, just thought that was interesting! never got to talk about this yet. this model sheet is more appealing than the whole cartoon!

there's also this from Hare-um Scare-um, which is another proto-Bugs short... very prophetic honestly

there's also Any Bonds Today, where Porky appears in the background alongside Elmer and has at least one line to help shill war bonds, but it's really Bugs' thing first and foremost and he's just sort of there to look pretty and rouse jingoism through being a recognizable and "reliable" face

BUT! the next true Porky and Bugs short in 1943, which is more relevant to your question. A Corny Concerto is really only the "true" short that pairs them together... and it's for half the runtime of the short, and neither of them say a word to each other LOL. but they're together in the Tale of Vienna Woods segment, and i HIGHLY recommend watching it if you haven't yet--extremely entertaining and charming, and paints a very interesting glimpse of what a Porky and Bugs dynamic would look like, had that been a thing. very antagonistic! Porky is hunting Bugs again, who's heckling him (again), coming to a climax where he fakes Porky out by pretending to die and then slaps him in a gag that makes it look like Porky is being a masher. normal stuff.

and thanks to this short i've fostered the headcanon that i think Porky and Bugs would absolutely detest each other if they were ever to interact and it gives me great joy to think about, and has been something i've been thinking about and concocting in my mind palace very much lately.

AND THAT'S REALLY IT FOR MAJOR APPEARANCES.. i talked about it in this ask, but the end of Porky Pig's Feat does make history by being the only time all the flagship stars appear together--Porky and Daffy are held prisoner in a hotel since they couldn't pay their rent, and they start reminiscing on how Bugs Bunny, the great cartoon star, would be able to get out of such a mess... and they try to get his help, only for it to reveal that he's stuck in the same situation! Porky doesn't say anything to Bugs/hardly regards him, but he does start the "gosh, if Bugs Bunny were only here" discussion... Bugs is really more like a godlike cartoon figure here rather than an actual character, and i see it more as a loophole for Frank Tashlin to work with Bugs, since he was very vocal about his disappointment in not getting to direct him often due to being low in the studio hierarchy and being "stuck with the damn pig" (rude!!)

and the last instance of them together that i can think of is a very brief part in the 1964 Dumb Patrol short (clarifying the date since there's a 1931 Bosko short by the same name): Porky in a silent cameo is slated to take down Yosemite Sam's warplane, but Bugs knocks him unconscious and steals his place because "he's got a wife and six piglets at home!" (...or, it's just a slightly more creative way of concocting exposition for what's a subpar Bugs and Yosemite Sam short)

and that's it for the shorts! ...so, surely, you're asking "okay, but why the long winded anticipatory introduction?" and to THAT! i say... because Porky and Bugs had a sort of double life and were very frequently paired in merchandising together.

Bugs was Porky's Daffy-figure in the comics, to the point where they were often the face of the comics together. usually a lot of stories revolving around Bugs trying to stir up Mr. Moral Goody Two Shoes Porky and get him in trouble, the two going on adventures together, or them just being buddies. it's... weirdly fascinating? the comics were often drawn and written by many of the same figures who worked on the cartoons, so it's a very interesting "what if" scenario that might give insight as to what it'd be like if we got more Porky and Bugs shorts

one of my all time favorite comic stories is an entire story about a big, convoluted misunderstanding where everyone things Porky wants to kill Bugs and they all try to stop him. the comics have been excellent fodder in fueling my "Porky just hates Bugs' guts" headcanon that i kinda just thought was me being funny, but has a weird amount of "evidence" for it LOL.

i mean Porky just goes straight for the ankle breaker here!

SO! they have been paired together in the past, but in a sort of strange, convoluted way. in terms of shorts there's very little, and the only time they ever talk to each other one on one is when Bugs is in his most primordial form. the comics and merchandising of the era paint more of a picture of what that dynamic could be like, but maybe a bit of a dubious one, since the characterizations and writing and general style of the comics are a bit different and more sanitized than the irreverence of the shorts, in both tone and format

From someone who saw a lot of it- it mostly seemed to be character assassination lmao. Not just the worldbuilding with some cats not being allowed in the nursery, but also the -flower suffix aaaand the traditional naming system.

Idk as a trans guy the worldbuilding never affected me too horribly cause… they’re cats. And the system won’t be perfect sometimes in worldbuilding. Is having a nice super inclusive world fun? Yeah it absolutely can be (and escapism Y’know?). But I’m also not the speaker for all trans men (or people) so eh.

But overall I think the biggest issue was someone didn’t like the writing, found something in it that upset them and spoke about it, and it went down the line down the line down the line until “did you know the Redux writer is transphobic? And hates anything fun??”

Now was there issues in the previous version? Yeaaaaahhh some decisions weren’t the greatest in my opinion (Sandstorm death and Raven’s planned death), but it’s also a fictional retelling of a story. I think people just forget they can… just not look at the story sometimes and read canon or make their own. It wasn’t like you were profiting off of the story then, you were just a fan of the canon and wanted to take your own spin on it.

Idk I could say more, but that’s just my two cents atm.

I'm glad you remember the events and had a more neutral opinion on it. I feel like it didn't help that, at the risk of sounding conceited, I was one of the earliest rewriters on the scene and inspired a lot of people to do the same. There's a pressure and crowd-type that comes with that level of popularity and influence that you absolutely did not want if you were writing during that era of Tumblr. It really bummed me out that a gathering of followers I didn't even really want in the first place had me hooked down in place.

Though, in an odd way, leaving the Redux behind did eventually work out for me and for the Redux itself. I'm a much better writer now than I was before, and I feel like I can do this story more justice and make it a better version of itself than it was when I was a twentyteen and hyperfocused on subversion above everything else (which led to the more problematic and stupid parts of the original fic). I have a second voice to point out problems and betas to make sure everything's okay, which I find essential for my personal growth as a creator.
